Isuzu has lopped more than £3,000 off the price of its four-door double cab Rodeo Denver pick-up. It now costs £13,990 on-the-road plus VAT compared with £17,345 when it was originally introduced in 2004. An automatic version is up for grabs for £14,990.

Volkswagen aims to take on Mitsubishi’s L200, Nissan’s Navara and Toyota’s Hilux with a purpose-built pick-up of its own.

Likely launch date is 2008/2009 says Bernd Wiedemann, chief executive officer at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and the newcomer will be produced as a robust load lugger rather than as a lifestyle SUV with a pick-up body.

While low wages in countries such as Slovakia are tempting some vehicle manufacturers to shift production from Western to Eastern Europe, one well-known light commercial is moving in the opposite direction.
