The Volkswagen Caddy 2004
Often when you’re in the market for a van its the second-hand vehicles that are going to get you the best value for money. The reviews will have long passed however, so you have to dig around for information on the right models to buy. The Volkswagen’s Caddy is a perfect second-hand model, having been out for just a year meaning all models will be in good condition, but at a much reduced price compared to when it was new.
Two engines are up for this model and both are diesel — VW has no plans to sell a petrol in the UK. The 2-litre SDI normally aspirated unit produces 69 bhp and develops 103 lb/ft of peak torque, while the 1.9-litre TDI provides 104 bhp and 184 lb/ft at 1,900rpm. VW is sticking with unit-injection instead of going common rail.
Suspension is conventional with an independent MacPherson strut assembly at the front and a leaf-sprung axle with an anti-roll bar at the rear. Brakes are discs all-round and anti-lock and traction control are included. Electro-mechanical power steering is standard.
Asymmetrically split rear doors give access to the 3.2m3 load bay and there’s the option of one or two sliding side doors. Six load-tie points are provided. With a GVW in excess of 2,200kg, a payload of 815kg and the ability to tow a braked trailer grossing at up to 1,400kg Caddy is a heavy duty high cube van.
The cab is classic VW; not particularly inspirational, but practical. The gearstick is floor-mounted and the seats — very comfortable and supportive — are set at a sensible height for easy access.
The SDI is under-powered for some applications, but the TDI is well up to the job. Refinement is high with very little vibration transmitted from the engine and the ride quality and handling are good, although the steering hinders the latter as it is over-assisted.
Overall, despite some small niggles you can’t get much better value for money if you’ve located a second-hand model at a goo price, and now is the time to start searching the market. You can find a range of accessories and parts for this model here, to fully equip your van for your day to day job.
