Volkswagen set to enter pick-up market
Volkswagen aims to take on Mitsubishi’s L200, Nissan’s Navara and Toyota’s Hilux with a purpose-built pick-up of its own.
Likely launch date is 2008/2009 says Bernd Wiedemann, chief executive officer at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and the newcomer will be produced as a robust load lugger rather than as a lifestyle SUV with a pick-up body.
"It could be built in South America or South Africa, but it will be sold in Western Europe as well as other global markets," he says. "However, we have no plans to sell it in the USA.
"There is overcapacity there and people are losing their shirts. I have no wish to enter that market."
VW’s newcomer will be built in both single and double cab guise, and as a 4×2 as well as as a 4×4.
The German manufacturer’s last foray into the pick-up market occurred some years ago and involved selling a rebadged Toyota Hilux as the VW Taro. It was not a major seller, but its successor could do considerably better.
